Abercrombie & Kent
-- Founded in 1962 as a safari operator in Kenya, Abercrombie & Kent is
recognized as a leader in deluxe African travel. A&K guests stay in
small, private lodges, elegant tented accommodations and even mobile
camps that are set up as close as possible to prime game-viewing areas.
A&K safaris are offered throughout south and east Africa and include a
few family-themed trips.
Adventures by Disney
-- Adventures by Disney operates one family-friendly safari in South
Africa. The trip is packed with game drives, excursions and activities
that children, teens, parents and grandparents can enjoy. Occasionally
separate activities are organized for "Junior Adventurers" -- for
example, young travelers make their own pizzas and watch a Disney movie
while parents enjoy a quiet meal and evening to themselves. Due to the
nature of the itinerary, the minimum age allowed is 6 years old, and the
suggested age is 8 years or older.
-- African Travel has operated on the continent since 1976 and has
itineraries in all the major safari regions. It offers individual
departures, where you can start your trip on any day and travel
independently, and small-group safaris for four to 12 travelers.
-- Alexander+Roberts offers a solid selection of well-planned, in-depth
safaris in south and east Africa that explore the continent's diverse
landscapes and cosmopolitan centers. Daily departures are available for
many of them. Itineraries range in length from four to 23 days, and
group sizes are kept to no more than 16 guests.
-- AmaWaterways, a company best known for its river cruises in Europe
and Southeast Asia, offers four-night cruises on the Chobe River in
Botswana combined with land touring, game park drives in eastern or
southern Africa and visits to spectacular Victoria Falls. Some
departures incorporate a three-night ride on the luxury Rovos Rail. On
board the 28-passenger MS Zambezi Queen, enjoy gourmet dining, excellent
service and staterooms with private balconies.
-- Founded in 1918, Collette is among the oldest and most respected tour
operators in the United States. The company's itineraries offer a
diverse mix of experiences. In addition to game drives in world-famous
wildlife parks, you might also visit a giraffe sanctuary, a local school
or wine-growing region or be treated to a traditional dinner.
-- These itineraries of nine and 12 days include a cruise of the Chobe
and Zambezi rivers, stays in lodges and hotels and visits to Victoria
Falls and Namibia's Impalila Island. Guests join game drives in jeeps or
board small craft for water safaris. The three-night cruise portion of
the trip takes place on the brand-new, 16-passenger African Dream, an
intimate ship with a restaurant, lounge with bar and sundeck.
-- G Adventures advocates low-impact, sustainable travel. Accommodations
are selected according to this philosophy, and you could overnight at
simple yet comfortable hotels, guest houses, lodges or cabins, or at
campsites where travelers participate in the preparation of meals and
other camp duties. Group sizes average 10 people per trip. G Adventures
offers many itineraries in the top safari countries.
Gate 1 Travel
-- Gate 1 is known for its competitively priced safaris that provide
tremendous value while also delivering an extraordinary experience. The
company operates safaris in South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania,
Zambia and Namibia. Among the offerings are Discovery Tours, which are
small-group departures limited to 22 travelers or fewer.
-- Founded in 1928, Globus has been a leader in escorted travel for
generations. The company's itineraries take in Africa's top safari
destinations, like Tanzania's Serengeti National Park, as well as sites
of historical interest, such as the Apartheid Museum and Nelson
Mandela's home in Johannesburg. The four-wheel-drive vehicles used on
game drives carry a maximum of six passengers, so everyone gets plenty
of opportunities for unobstructed wildlife viewing.
-- Intrepid focuses on the cultures and traditions of destinations in
east and south Africa, making use of locally owned restaurants and
lodgings. It is committed to the principles of sustainable travel. You
can learn about the culture and customs of Botswana's Kalahari Bushmen
or set up camp on a cattle ranch in South Africa. On average there are
10 guests per departure.
-- Daily, year-round departures ensure maximum flexibility for those
choosing a Monograms safari. Travelers are in private vehicles with only
members of their own party, along with a driver/guide who can help you
spot wildlife. In cities visited during non-safari portions of the trip,
guests can rely on the help of a local host for advice on restaurants
Natural Habitat Adventures
-- This operator is the travel partner of the World Wildlife Fund and
draws on that organization's resources and expertise to create
itineraries and train its tour guides. Dedicated to conservation and
sustainable tourism, the company's offerings include photo safaris led
by naturalists who also are photography pros. Natural Habitat keeps
groups small, usually averaging seven travelers in Africa. It utilizes
private wildlife reserves and remote, distinctive lodges and camps that
are located where wildlife viewing is best.
-- Founded in 1933, SITA specializes in travel to exotic destinations,
and its trips to Africa are among the company's most popular
itineraries. The maximum number of participants for any SITA tour in
Africa is 15. The company has numerous safari options in south and east Africa.
-- Deluxe tour company Tauck utilizes well-appointed tented camps and
the finest hotels and lodges on its safaris. The company has partnered
with BBC Earth for itineraries in east and south Africa that give guests
the technology to experience natural wonders in a unique way; for
example, use night-vision goggles and thermal imaging to observe
nocturnal life in game parks.
